GAYA Filmes was established in 1992 by filmmaker Renato Barbieri aiming to produce top-notch entertainment content for cinema and television as well as as a learning tool. The result of this enterprise was the production of titles such as Atlântico Negro – na Rota dos Orixás; A Invenção de Brasília; Cidades Inventadas; As Vidas de Maria; Malagrida; Félix Varela; Brasil Migrante and Lendas Animadas, among others.

The production company’s main focus is on making feature films and TV series of social and environmental relevance in the formats of fiction, documentary and animation.

Currently GAYA Filmes is post-producing two feature films about contemporary slavery in the Brazilian Amazon: the fiction film PUREZA and the documentary SERFDOM. 

We make our audio-visual projects with an aim to achieve universal, accessible communication , that is understood by a broad public, from the illiterate to the specialist, on the issues addressed. We owe that result to the cohesive efforts between research, talent, production design and narrative rigor.

Renato Barbieri is a filmmaker. Having worked as director, producer and script writer since 1985, he has produced many awarded pieces of social relevance, on themes ranging from Human Rights to being Brazilian, from biographies and to Brazil-Africa relations. He is currently producing two feature films about contemporary slavery in the Brazilian Amazon: PUREZA (Fiction) and SERFDOM (Documentary). He considers creative audio-visual work as a tool to broaden historical and environmental perception. His creative audio-visual work is based on research, experimentation and communication. He has produced many award-winning titles such as Atlântico Negro – na Rota dos Orixás; Malagrida; Félix Varela; As Vidas de Maria; A Invenção de Brasília; Cidades Inventadas, Brasil Migrante, Lendas Animadas and Cora Coralina – Todas as Vidas, among others.
